Flying Start Explained
The Flying Start scheme is a Welsh Government initiative which
aims to create positive outcomes for children aged 0-3 in the most
disadvantaged communities in Wales.
The scheme provides free, quality part-time childcare for 2- to
3-year-olds along with health visiting services, parenting support
and language and play sessions. The scheme is provided through a
grant to local authorities.
Registered childminders in Wales are already contributing by
delivering Flying Start childcare across different areas of Wales
including Bridgend, Denbighshire, Carmarthenshire and Swansea.
Welsh Government have committed to doubling the number of
children benefitting from the scheme and on 21st November, Deputy
Minister for Children and Social Services Gwenda Thomas announced
that a further £55m had been set aside to fund this expansion.
The Deputy Minister also announced that the way in which the
scheme is targeted will change with a new focus on targeting
families living on income benefits in addition to targeted
geographical areas.
NCMA Cymru is working with officials in Welsh Government to
highlight the role registered childminders play in delivering
Flying Start and improving outcomes for children and families
through the scheme.
