Award-winning Helen Wynne

Helen WynneNCMA member, Helen Wynne from Wrexham, north Wales, has been recognised for her remarkable achievements through numerous awards.

Helen recently won the Take a Break and 4Children Family Heroes Award for going above and beyond the call of duty to support families through tough times.

Helen, pictured left, won the Student of the Year award whilst completing an NVQ in specialist childcare and came second in Nursery World’s Childminder of the Year, with a High Commendation Award.

Helen was named Student of the Year for her outstanding effort in a special needs care NVQ. Parent Sue Graves said, "Helen’s drive and enthusiasm to continually improve her knowledge and skills relating to all aspects of her work is a quality that is to be admired. I don’t know where she gets her energy!"

Helen began childminding after the birth of her son. Dyfan has complex needs, including physical and learning disabilities and visual and hearing impairments. The experience of caring for her son, combined with her extensive training means that that Helen has been able to support families in Wrexham in caring for severely disabled children.

Helen is nicknamed by some parents as "The Oracle". As well as running a large childminding setting, she regularly attends support groups and delivers courses for the local Family Information Service, sharing her strength, advice and practical information with parents and people training to be childminders.

Helen also helps single parent families as well as those who have experienced domestic abuse, alcohol abuse and vulnerable children who are on the At Risk Register and works as a Early Support Parent Trainer, an initiative by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Helen’s most recent award nomination is from her daughter, Megan. The 11-year-old wants to share how special her Mum is and has nominated Helen for Tesco’s Mum of the Year awards, to be held in March 2012. "With all Mummy’s love, effort and encouragement, Dyfan is starting to come on in leaps and bounds and is such a chatterbox now! Fantastic, when doctors said he would never walk or talk."

Congratulations, Helen, for all you’ve achieved so far, and we look forward to seeing what comes next.
