Childminders drive sector growth
Ofsted has today published new data on childcare providers for
the period to the end of December 2011.
Catherine Farrell, joint chief executive at NCMA said: "The
figures show a small decrease in the number of registered
childminders in England.
"Whilst we would not want to see a further decline, the figures
are still higher than this time last year and in our view show that
the profession is more than holding its own in the current
challenging economic climate. The apparent decrease is
compounded by the fact that Ofsted is deregistering childminders
with no children on roll. Without this project there would actually
have been a very small net increase for the period.
"What is very positive is the increase in the number of
registered early years’ places being offered by childminders, and
Ofsted’s acknowledgement that it is childminders who are driving
growth across the early years’ sector," said Farrell.
NCMA is committed to improving opportunities for the
professional development and access to business support for
childminders to ensure that they can continue to provide the
highest standards of care and learning for children.
